THE FIRST NORMAN FOSTER CONDOMINIUM IN THE PHILIPPINES

Foster + Partners is founded and led by Norman Foster, who is considered the last great architect of our time. In 1999, he was awarded the Pritzker Architecture Prize, commonly referred to as the architecture equivalent of the Nobel Prize.

Foster + Partners transcends architecture, integrating design, function, and sustainability in every project. The work of this British Studio spans the decades and leaps over international borders, maintaining a unique combination of modernism and tradition.

The principles of sustainability are integral to Foster + Partner’s work: designing buildings that run at a fraction of current energy requirements, or urban quarters that can support thriving communities, improving the quality of life in a city for all.

Every project starts with fresh thinking and extensive research into the 'local DNA'; leading to a solution that is tailor-made to both site and user, and audited against global standards.

Design is typically undertaken by a small, close-knit team who will see the project through to completion, providing continuity throughout.

SOME OF FOSTER + PARTNERS’ MOST FAMOUS WORKS

The Gherkin, London: This now-essential portion of the skyline stands at 180 meters, housing 41 floors. This commercial hub in London’s primary financial district was built with a radical approach – technically, architecturally, socially, and spatially. At the summit is a club that offers a spectacular 360-degree panorama across the capital.

Apple Park, California: Opened in 2017, the sheer size and circular design of Apple Park have earned it the nickname “the spaceship.” Totaling 175 acres, a little over three-quarters of the space is devoted to greenery, with the purpose of becoming less of an industrial space and more of a refuge, even for Apple employees.

Hearst Tower, New York:  The headquarters of Hearts Communications houses some of the world’s most renowned titles – Good Housekeeping, Cosmopolitan, and Esquire, just to name a few. The structure’s signature diagrid design, using 20% less steel than a conventional building of the same size, is just one of the elements that won it the 2006 Emporis Skyscraper Award.

Bund Finance Center, Shanghai: Perhaps appropriately, this mixed-use development that seems to combine vintage colors and outlines with space-age methods and styles is a powerful punctuation mark along the waterfront of Shanghai. At the heart of it all lies an arts and cultural center, with performance venues directly inspired by the traditional Chinese opera stages.

Having said this, The Estate Makati, by design, is benchmarked on nothing but the best in the global landscape to ultra-luxury residential masterpieces such as:

  • The Hana, Singapore

  • The Marq, Singapore

  • One Hyde Park, London

  • 432 Park Avenue, New York

  • The Opus, Hong Kong

CROSSING BORDERS

The Estate Makati is for the discerning few, housing 188 flats, keeping only 4 flats to a floor. Each floor in turn contains a private lift lobby, while the building sports a four-meter elevated driveway – guaranteeing exclusivity and privacy. The Cruciform structure gives each window the potential for the widest possible view.

This four-point design gives every flat a 270-degree view of the city below, further heightening the daily living experience. With this structure comes an atrium core, which lends itself to natural ventilation as well as room for air conditioning units, leaving the façade clean and undisrupted. This form also provides the most luxe elevator arrangement of two private lifts for every residence.

THE SURFACE

In the exterior itself also lies the signature of Foster + Partners: the very surface of the building is made of glass fiber-reinforced concrete, creating a non-staining finish designed to resist the marks and harmful effects of air pollution, rendering cleaning and repainting unnecessary. Apart from resisting harmful environmental factors, The Estate is designed to actually contribute to the city-wide ecology, rather than just being a part of it – generous, shared green spaces don’t only benefit the residents, but also create “living roofs,” increasing biodiversity in an urban setting. Unhindered aeration, energy-efficient spaces and utilities, and deep shading all play their part in improving the lives of residents.

THE SPACE

A single open space can give the occupant freedom of choice – but that can very quickly become a burden itself. Instead of restrictive walls, obtrusive home features, and the need to maneuver around sectioned-off spaces, The Estate boasts the double slab feature, which is normally reserved for commercial structures, giving each unit a column-free design. These double slabs contain the unsightly necessaries – wires and pipes and such – keeping the unit reconfigurable for every change, whether in taste or in lifestyle.

THE ANGLES

Natural light is made possible in this heavily urban setting with the treatment of the windows, which are specially built at an angle of 10 degrees, to allow both seclusion and an almost inhabitable, unhindered view of the city below. Optimized yet again by the lack of columns, this is kind of attention to detail that further secures each resident’s privacy, while keeping their tether to the world. The angle of the windows also helps maximize each unit’s space. Partnered with the column-free design, the entire layout essentially makes more room – with less. The whole project is designed so that residents can move in and around the structure’s “outer skin.” Bathtubs, desks, and daybeds are integrated with the bay windows, making you practically one with the facade.
